Rook, or Ruux as he’s known in his homeland of Mortale, is an umbra that was summoned to the world of a young sorceress named Maude. He now serves as her familiar, living quietly inside her shadow.
“Supply magic for the summoner and feed as needed. That was the deal.”
His thoughts constantly reminded him that it was forbidden, but he couldn’t help himself; he grew fond of the human. Likewise, she found good company in him.
He knew it was too good to be true.
Forming bonds with summoners was taboo for a good reason: umbrae must generate and feed on their host’s negative energy, slowly corrupting their mind over time, in order to continue providing them with magic…
…or else they’ll die of starvation.
